| Description | This ministry is involved in a variety of programs sharing faith, time and talent that link Holy Cross with our Sharing Parish and School. Involvement includes the collection of school supplies in the Fall, coordination of various health initiatives throughout the year, providing arts & crafts material for after-school programs, coordination of an annual tuition assistance program, tutoring, mentoring, and assistance with ongoing repair and maintenance of the school. Other parish-wide activities include clothing drives and an ongoing collection for the food pantry. FRIENDS OF ST. MALACHY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Tutors: The tutors travel to St. Malachy School each Wednesday throughout the school year to assist students in grades 1-8 with classroom assignments. Each tutor works with 1-2 children during each of the five, 40-minute tutoring sessions. A love of children, patience and a competence in elementary school math and English is required. A teaching certificate is not necessary. Transportation from Holy Cross provided. Math Tutors: Many St. Malachy students are in need of tutoring specifically in the area of math. Schedule is flexible and need not coincide with the weekly tutoring already taking place every Wednesday. Mentors: The mentoring program currently takes place on Thursdays during the school year. Mentors provide a continuum of interest and relationship with fourth, fifth or sixth grade St. Malachy students recommended by the principal and staff. Helping young people with challenges, witnessing improvements and seeing smiling faces is its own reward. Building Repair: Building repair is ongoing in the 100 year old St. Malachy School. Various repairs and improvements are done on an “as needed” basis one Saturday a month. Transportation and lunch (including great desserts) are provided. Health Initiatives Assistance: Health initiatives include providing immunizations to students as well as dental, vision, hearing, and asthma screenings. Volunteers are needed to help facilitate getting the students to and from the location within the school where the services take place. Food Pantry Drivers: Each weekend, food donated by Holy Cross parishioners and bread provided by Panera Bread Company are delivered to the Cathedral Shelter Food Pantry located on Ogden Ave. at Monroe St. in Chicago. Time commitment is approximately 2 hours one Saturday every six weeks. |
