A Neighbor’s Interdependence Depends on YOU
| Holy Cross Church is a founding member of the Southeast Lake County Faith
in Action coalition that provides interfaith volunteer care giving in
Southeast Lake County. Holy Cross, along with Zion Lutheran Church in Deerfield
and B’nai Torah in Highland Park, received a Robert
Woods Johnson Foundation grant to join more than 1200 other programs nationwide
to care for their neighbors who have chronic illnesses, disabilities or
are isolated. Volunteers help those
in need with many everyday activities, such as picking up groceries, providing
a ride to the doctor or visiting for social support and providing respite
for family caregivers.
Faith in Action programs foster one-to-one relationships
between volunteers and care recipients as opposed to one-time help. A
Faith in Action program may provide services for people of any
age with long-term health problems. Faith
in Action volunteers come from churches, synagogues, mosques and other
houses of worship, as well as the community at large and are well trained
and supervised by the volunteer coordinators assigned by the members of
the interfaith coalition. The volunteer coordinator for Holy Cross is
Fran Duda.

As the nation’s population ages, the number of people
who will develop long-term health conditions will increase. Many of us are faced with the challenge of helping
a family member, neighbor or friend who suffers from arthritis, cancer,
Alzheimer’s or other long-term health condition that is progressively
deteriorating. In an increasingly
mobile society, elders may be isolated from their children and other family
members who live far away. The
Faith In Action program provides assistance with some of the problems

Other members of this Faith in Action Coalition are: Catholic
Charities of Lake County; Deerfield Senior Services; Highland Park Senior Services;
Family Services of Lake County; Rainbow Life Service Loss and Grief Program;
Steven Harris and Michael Blesky, the mayors of Deerfield
and Highland Park, respectively; Karen May, State Representative of the 58th
District; Senator Susan Garrett of the 29th District; and Julie Morrison,
West Deerfield Township Supervisor. We have recently also been joined by members
of Christ United Methodist Church in Deerfield.
